Within this group the focus is on the integrated design, analysis and decision making for large-scale (in physical size) multi-disciplinary dynamical systems. We address the fundamental question about what model complexity and actuator/sensor configuration is necessary for all individual system components in order to use these models for reliable and robust model based diagnostics, parameter estimation, monitoring, parametric system optimization and control. Uncertainty quantification and disturbance modelling are essential parts of the integrated design of these multi-disciplinary systems. Therefore, the combination of measurement data with multi-disciplinary system models is essential to enable reliable, robust and efficient decision making. |

Wind turbines are becoming ever larger to attain higher power ratings, resulting in increased structural flexibility. This flexibility forms new challenges in the control of such wind turbines. In my group, we develop fundamentally novel operational control strategies, load control methods, and learning algorithms. To reach even higher performance levels, control co-design enables the synergetic optimization of the turbine structural design and controller using data-efficient techniques. |

Uwe Fechner has many years of experience in industry and academia. Whilst employed at Pegasus GmbH, Germany between 2003-2008 he gained a deep knowledge on developing embedded systems for security critical systems. He worked in the department of Mechatronics of Kiel University between 2008-2010, teaching cooling of electronic systems. During his research in Delft over the 2010-2016 period he has become an internationally recognized airborne wind energy expert. From 2016 to 2019 he was owner of the startup aenarete - Wind Drones and later working at ABB in Delft on chargers for electric vehicles. He is member of the airborne wind IEA energy workgroup and works on a Julia based reference model for kite power systems. The focus of his research at DCSC is the development of learning algorithms for the recalibration of turbine models inside physics-based control systems for degraded wind turbines. |
